  1. I think the quote above is very much true. Writing will improve your reading skills and reading will improve your writing skills. Each one gives a point of view that complements and improve the other. Today's class was mainly a refresher that remind me some the basics of writing the the english language.

    2. As someone who is getting to know English as my first language, I found it helpful to learn to read first and then write. When I read, I not only read for content but also the author’s style of writing. Thinking is another story … I believe we learn to think while we go through life.

  2. I have been taught throughout my time in school always to read, which makes you a better writer. When you read, you can see how a writer creates his story. You can see and feel the author’s style of writing. I was taught this method in a literature class at Xiaozhuang University where I was introduced to Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man & the Sea. Hemingway writes simply and with no complications. His ideas are easily understood. I like his style of writing and try to emulate it. I keep my topic sentences short, keep the adjectives to a minimum, and try to be direct in telling a story. Although I agree that reading makes a person a better writer, thinking is something that happens along the way of life. I don’t think we can be taught how to think. We just do. Some are better at it than others, and reading may help. Common sense, experience, and school help create a thinking student, in my opinion. Today's class was very productive, like most every class we've had this intersession. Creating a balanced sentence is an interesting point of view. To me, wordy sentences can be avoided ... it's like math in a way. The sentence is the formula and the parts of speech are the variables. If you're into math, sentence structure is basically the same. I know it's a day early, but I want to thank everyone for including me in your class. I learned a lot!

    1. Thank you Han! You are very smart! I like your math-sentence analogy, so intelligent. School and reading alone will help us develop thinking skills and how to place those thoughts on paper or in speech. Keep up the good work! See you tomorrow!

    2. I agree, actually after reading this, sentence structure is like a formula.

  3. The quote above explains that the more we read and understand the grammatical way, we will learn hoe to improve our writing. The same results happens vice versa. And the more we continue improving our reading and writing skills, we begin to improve are critical thinking skills. We learn how to interrupt passages and readings such as the image above. Lastly, today's activities was long but productive. The handbook was helpful and I will use it as a guide for my future papers.

    2. You mention critical thinking skills. This is very important, like problem solving skills. These skill sets can be used in any class, anywhere, even at work.

  4. Today we spent more time than we ever have on reading content I believe. Or perhaps we just covered more content in one class than we have in previous class dates. I learned much but I really needed to get a better grasp of the basics for future english classes. I got to hear everyone's brain stretcher and I can't wait for tomorrows party!! Thank you EN100!!!

    1. My friends tell me EN110 involves a lot of writing, and reading and interpreting the reading from many different perspectives. Sounds like a lot of work, but to me, English is the foundation for all other classes.

  5. I strongly agree with the quote on the picture. It's very true, writing helps your reading and vice versa. I thought class was great today, the topics were brief to go over. I liked going over the parts of speech because I get confused by that sometimes. Hope everyone does well on their last essay!

    1. I think in order to write well, we have to understand the parts of speech and the words themselves. One leads into the other. I don’t think we could just read, or just write … the two do go hand-in-hand, but should reading be favored over writing?

      Delete
    2. I wish you also do well on the final essay.

    3. I too enjoyed reviewing the parts of speech. I think that this category in english is my weakest.

    4. I get confused on parts of speech as well. Lets eat!!!

  6. Reading is the receptive side of knowledge, while writing is the productive side. Thus, reading and writing are reciprocal processes. Writing skill is a predictor of academic success along with reading comprehension. (Reading Research in Action, 2008) For today's class, we reviewed some basics of English. I cannot believe we finished the book in a short time.

  7. This quote reminds me of the "domino effect". I say this because when you write more you gain reading skills and if you keep doing both it just helps hand in hand by gaining strengths in writing and reading. Today class was fun it was a review of the things I have may forgotten that I have learned before. I am still at awe we finished the book so quickly.

  8. I agree with the quote profoundly. Reading and writing are both essential towards each other. In order to become more properly educated in writing, one must be able to become a good reader. Same goes the other way around. Today's class session was good overall. I firmly believe that intersession went by way too fast and I also cannot believe we finished to book. As a reward for our achievements, It is time to party!

  9. I believe that reading and writing do go hand-in-hand. We learn to read so we can fully understand our writing. The more we read, the more complex our writing becomes. We can practice either one to get better at both. I prefer to write more than read, but I still gain reading skills. Todays activities were a helpful recap of using the parts of speech in the english language.

  10. I agree with the quote above. Reading and writing go hand in hand. You learn to write better by reading or vice versa. One must know how to do one to do the other one is how I see it. Today's class was fun. Going back to the basic and refreshing our mind on how all essays started was good. I cannot believe that the intersession class ended way too fast.. We also finished the book fast which is also a good thing. Party tomorrow!
