  1. I think this resource is great for reviewing before writing an essay or a paper. The resource shows a lot of common mistakes that we often overlook when we are writing papers or essays. I make a few of these mistakes so this resource was very useful to me. Class today was good, we learned more about paragraphs, as well as writing introductions for paragraphs. Happy New Year, and Happy B-day to Alixes and Krystal!

  3. Professor Kahn’s article about common mistakes made while writing English is very helpful to people like me. Since English is my second language, I really have to pay attention to all of the details, like punctuation, apostrophes, the use of it’s and its, and so on. The American English language is very complicated and has many rules. I see Kahn’s article as a good resource tool to turn to when we are required to write papers. In today’s class, I learned all the stages of the writing process. I learned that there are some introductory methods, including a direct statement of the thesis, background, definition of term, quotations, a shocking statement, and question. In addition, I learned some effective ways of concluding a paper. There are also many ineffective ways of concluding an essay.

  4. Today, I was shown about six different types of introductory paragraphs that I am almost sure I have never seen before. I am thankful for these examples because many of a time, I really need a strong start for my development paragraphs to really flow. My brain stretcher the "Blow Hole" made me miss my brother who lives in Honolulu. Lately, I have been really wanting to go and visit him and possibly find work there.

    6. There are so many ways to introduce a subject that it gets confusing to me. Unfortunately for me, I take so long to think of a response, and then writing it takes even longer.

  5. On the discussion of common mistakes of English grammar, mechanics, and punctuation, this site is quite helpful. The examples help in demonstrating the differences between what is right and what is wrong. However, I wish there was a further explanation on the reason of why the example is right. For example, the last common mistake for hyphens. I wish there was bit more explanation for the reason for hyphens. Lastly, today's class activities was productive and helpful to approaches for different introduction and conclusion styles.

    1. English is a strict language and some of the reasons are in-depth and may be hard to explain for grammar corrections.

    2. I also would like more explanations for the usage of hypens

    3. I agree, I sometimes think in punctuation and grammar that the examples that's given aren't clear. To me, some examples make sense and others don't.

    4. I bookmarked Dr. Kahn’s article because I am always making mistakes. I have to go over my work many, many times before I feel comfortable having other people read it. I guess I am insecure about my writing and want to make it better.

  11. As a foreign student, it is hard to overemphasize basic grammatical and spelling errors even I had a clear idea. The reason why is that I usually think in Chinese or Korean, and translate whatever in my mind into English.
Today's class was interesting. I like the part that we write three different introductions. I had problem in writing introduction. I began with a "big" statement without any specifics. I hope I can do better job in my future essays.

    1. I always have that problem, Kim Ha. It takes me a long time to analyze an English written essay or paper or book because I first have to read it in Chinese, and then translate into English. I know there is something lost in the translation.

    2. I have many friends who are not born with English as their first language, at first I use to feel sorry for them. But I now think that you are both stronger for seeking education in a foreign language. I really want to learn and speak fluent foreign languages.

  13. The paragraph titled, "The Drag" really opened my eyes to professional drag racing. A person with a need for speed feels alive when the rush kicks in. Adrenaline is the one feeling we all have at the heat the moment, both emotional and inspirational. As soon as the author stabbed the pedal, all of his (or her) problems in life just disappears. It feels like an eternity, because the speed and adrenaline he feels slows time down; it is like he is in another place when he is at top speed. When he hits the finish line, for a few seconds, everything goes quiet, and the only sound he could hear was his heart beating rapidly. Finally, the crowd roars his name.

"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart."

    1. It also opened my eyes, Edward, but to a world of adjectives and descriptors. I like to escape into the world of literature or drama shows on the Internet. When you say, “all of his (or her) problems in life just disappears” it seems as if it’s only temporary. That’s why I like reading … I can escape into another world.

  15. I was going over the grammatical, mechanical, and punctuation information and I realized too often do I get "Its" and "It's" confused. "Its" is the possessive form of "It" whereas "It's" is the contraction form for "It is." I sometimes use commas improperly.
