Share your thoughts regarding today's activities. (Re: Reading for Writing, Kinds of Support for Text-Based/Reading-Based Writing, Descriptive Essay Review)

  1. Today was much more content than yesterday of course. I enjoyed most of the reading, underlining, annotating, and outlinging partly because some has already written in my book. I got to see this person's thoughts and answers and I have to admit it was very hard to form my own opinion while reading his. I did not know we had to stand up and read our brain stretcher out loud.

    1. I agree with brain stretcher, however I think it's a good practice for speaking skills.

  2. Another great day in class. I learned valuable skills such as annotating, underlining, and outlining. I would love to practice these methods and use them often. I know these procedures can be used for other courses here at the University of Guam. I also would like to say have a very Merry Christmas.

  3. I have learned most of the writing techniques during high school but I have bad memory so I'm glad we were able to review the strategies which helped me remember and I also learned much more than I did since the book was filled with examples and we all contributed with one another, also made it easier to understand. Today was awesome! Merry Christmas, everyone!

  4. Although I was late to class and was unprepared, I thank one of our classmate for sharing his book with me so I can catch up on the reading and the work in class. It was good and valuable learning annotating, underlining, and outlining skills. This may come in handy later on in the future with my other classes. The book showed enough examples for me to understand the work and it was fun. Enjoy your Christmas everyone!

    1. Hi Kim! I was reading your post and feel the same way about concentrating on my main idea when writing. I was trying to do the 'All About Me Essay" last night and I was having trouble with branching off my ideas. Reading more to recognize the main points and ideas will help me know what I should write when explaining a topic too.

  6. Today's lesson was very productive. It was great refreshing mind with the different writing techniques since I have learned them during high school and my ID180 class. It was also great that we were able to practice the techniques and understand them better. The activity with the pictures was a fun and I was able to listen to how everyone can come up with many different ideas from one picture. Overall, I had a nice and productive day today. Merry Christmas everyone!

  8. Today, there were several reading techniques taught in class, some of which I already learned at the English Language Institute and in EN085. These included outlining, underlining, and summarizing. However, annotating and the citing of sources are new for me. I need to review this in-depth after class, when I have free, but quiet time. I also found that my reading is terrible ... it takes me awhile to read because I do not know the vocabulary as well as I should, and my pronunciation of words is not accurate. This class will be a challenge for me, but I will prepare everyday.

    1. Take it one day at a time Han. I hope you don't mind me calling you Han. Usually in American culture we give nicknames or sometimes we call people by the first letter in their name such as James = "J". Anyways, It just takes practice but for your advantage Han, you need to talk to people in english more. I had two really close friends growing up, a Taiwanese guy and a Korean guy. Both were learning english at that time, they often asked me about slang words and how to properly use words in a sentence. Finding someone you can often ask about english grammar would really boost your confidence Han. You are doing great! I like having you in my class.

    2. We all have pronunciation errors. I believe once this class is over, you will have increased your skills in speech.

    3. I feel the same way with you while I am reading. It is also hard to me pronounce every word correctly.

  9. Class was great, we learned the importance of organization in writing. Outlining, underlining and annotating are key skills for writing itself. The Brain stretcher was interesting; it was a different way of introducing a free writing, brain storming type of writing. These topics will be very beneficial to future papers. I hope everyone had a good Christmas.

  10. Today was a good review of the writing techniques. I learn them throughout high school. Underlining is a technique I like to use often. It makes it so much easier for me to remember what I'm reading. Looking forward to the rest of our class sessions!
