Reflection - Test #2 - Jan. 9

Discuss your thoughts on taking Test #2.  Were you prepared for it?  If so, what strategies did you use as part of your preparation?  If you were not prepared for it, what will you do next time to ensure that you do well on the test? In addition, discuss your thoughts of today's activities.

  1. I thought I was fairly prepared for Test #2, I knew what I wanted to write about the day before. The strategies I used was planning ahead of time and doing the writing process ahead of time so I can organize my ideas early. I actually started writing the essay at a later time (12 midnight) than test #1(started at 10 PM), but I thought I wrote test #2 better. Class was good, it was quiet I guess because everyone was tired from doing their essay the night before. We learned about classifying places, things, ideas, groups, etc. and avoiding overlapping.

    5. Totally agree, starting early gives you time to improve your writing and improve your final paper.

    6. I also felt more prepared for this test, probably because I learned from the first test to always be prepared. My idea came to me right away, but the planning of it took some time. I really don’t like the outlining process, but it did help with this paper. I think I stayed on track. You also bring up a good point, Gibson, about when is the best time to write. I like writing in the early mornings when everything is quiet and I am alone with my thoughts.

  2. I was more prepared for test #2 than test #1. The topic i chose was a moment that changed your life. I used my experiences and emotions to help narrate this essay. I also used the general outline as my guide. Today's class session was good overall. I learned more about writing classification and overlapping

    5. I also used emotions, making the essay seem descriptive and narrative.

    6. Your topic is interesting. I am not sure I have a moment that changed my life.

    7. yes, using your emotions is an effective way when writing a narrative essay. It helps your audience feel your experience more and imagine themselves as in your place as well.

  3. I was prepared for test #2. I got home from class yesterday, and I did my essay. I told myself that I will not procrastinate like the previous test we had, test #1. I was focused, and I had all the time in the world. I was able to finish fast because my topic was based on experience. So, I also had time to go out at night. Yay! Today's class was again quick. We learned about classification and overlapping.

    2. I too did not procrastinate and take a nap before writing my essay this time. It was effective and I should do it more often.

    5. To procrastinate is not a good thing, especially for students and people who work for a living. I agree … essays must be written right away, otherwise we’ll rush through and make silly mistakes.

  4. I still wasn't quite prepared for Test #2. I haven't been in the best situation these past days which doesn't help me focus as much. Although I'm a bit distracted, I'm still learning to improve each and every day. Next time, I will make sure to read the rubric twice and as well as the handout and notes. Class was great today. I learned about overlapping and patterns of classification.

  5. For test #2, I believe I was somewhat prepared for this time around. Some strategies I use were listing and even free-writing since test #2 was a narrative essay. The part that I had a bit of difficult though was making an outline for my narrative. When I write any type of narrative or story, I just write anything that comes to mind (or free-writing). Overall, I found this test the most fun to write since I like to write narratives or stories. As for today's activities, it was interesting learning about the genre of classification. Classification can be quite difficult depending on the amount of topics that can be classified. But with all the exercises we did in class gave me a better understanding for this genre.

  6. Test#2 was easier than test#1 for me, because the topic that I chose was "All about Me." I wrote the same topic before, so I just simply revised it. Hopefully I can get better grade than the first essay. Today's class was fun. I did not experience yard sale before. I have no idea how it looks like.

    1. Glad test 2 was better for you Kim. My essay was about an experience that led to renewed faith. I felt the essay talked about my life a lot because I was thinking of revising my All about Me essay. I got a lot more out of test 2 than actually writing my All About Me essay. My experience was very strong.

  7. Based on the first test, I now know what to do and have prepared as best as I could. I sat down and organized my thoughts using an outline, although I really do not like using an outline. (I found out later it actually helped :). In addition, I found my technique of writing an outline was getting better. After listing down everything that I could recall, I knew I was ready to write my test essay about a turning point on my life—moving to Guam. It was an essay that made me feel sad because I remembered all of my family and friends saying good-bye. I realized that my adventure had not been recorded until now. In today's class, I learned that to achieve classify efficiently, there are four techniques, including select a plural subject, decide on a principle for grouping the units of your subject, establish the group or classes, and write about the classes.

    2. I also said sad goodbye to my family and friends. I regretted that I moved to Guam many times. My life in Guam is simply hell, but that is what I chose.

  8. I was definitely not prepared for test number two. I had trouble coming up with an idea, however I finally decided on one. To get more preparation I would start a week earlier and modify the essay everyday. Today's activities showed another way of getting more specific into ideas. I would branch out into a subject, then principle, and finally divide it into classes.

    2. Same here i was not prepared for this test. But i think i did great though. :)
Lots of idea's kept coming into my mind while i was doing this test. So it was pretty ok for me

  9. I think I was prepared for test #2 because I wrote about an experience that happened to me so it was much easier for me to gather information, outline, and finally write my essay. I find it very easy when I do clustering because I sort of do the outlining in it too. It's hard to explain... Next time though I will review the rubric again because this essay I forgot to look at the rubric and I don't know if I followed it correctly again. Class was good today went by fast and learned so much more about classification.

    1. If you believed you did your best, then a rubric is unnecessary. In life you don't carry a scoreboard, you must make your judgement on your own.

    2. Camarin, you might be a visual learner if clustering is your forte. I have been doing freewriting and listing on our past essays. For myself, it helps put my ideas down and it is easier for me to organize my outlines. In fact, my little sister has been helping me on my essays, she peer reviews them as well. I am so thankful for her.

    4. That's good you were prepared for this test. I did my test last minute due to busy work from last night. But i knew what to do for this test. I knew what i should write about. It Much easier for me too because i was writing about my first day in a new school and i had many experince

    5. The rubric is very helpful and really helped organize my views about writing in general and about my topic, specifically. I think that all of the online materials have been very helpful for all of us to get our thoughts lined up and presented in the right way.

  10. Test 2 for me was much better for me. I had rest. I did the process. I had strong supporting information. I was finished writing the essay in two hours. I feel so much better about this essay than Test 1. Classifications is not bad, I learned about overlapping, which we should keep an eye out for.

  11. Test # 2 was fun for me because it is like telling someone a story except you are writing it. Narrative writing does not require much research because you already know what you want to write. I think the most challenging part would be how to organize your thoughts and ideas so that the reader can clearly grasp what you are trying to write about. Again, the writing process was helpful for me because it helped me organize my thoughts and ideas. Today's activities was fun and i learned new things like classifications and principles.

    1. Even though there isn’t much research to write a narrative essay, I still think you have to really organize your thoughts to tell a good story., or at least a story people would listen to or read. I want to read characters who come alive or events that seem real, even if they are just the imagination of the author.

  12. This Test Was not so hard for me since it's a narrative essay. I love narrative essay's because that is what i am actually good at. I did this test last minute so i hope i get a good grade. This test was fun though, it brings back old memories while i was writing my essay.
